UNL Math Day Results

January 17, 2007

Sixteen mathletes from Sutton got on a bus at 6:30 AM  on Nov 8th to join almost 1400 students from across Nebraska at the 18th Annual UNL Math Day.  Every student took part in the PROBE (Problems Requiring Original Brilliant Effort) test.  The top three score were used for the team score.  Our top three scorers were Alan Nelson, Taylor Schalutman, and Andrea Ochsner.  Their combined score of 117 placed Sutton in a tie for 12th place with Thayer Central.  Perennial power Elkhorn Mt. Michael won both the PROBE and Math Bowl competition.  Twenty four schools competed in class C.  Sutton’s score was better than area schools Blue Hill, Wilber, Sandy Creek, and Friend.

In the first round of the Math Bowl, Justin Ochsner, Sam Overturf, and Taylor Schlautman beat the team from East Butler.  In the next two rounds, Nate Green substituted for Taylor.  The team lost to Elmwood-Murdock and then in a heart breaker were eliminated 3-4 by Wilber.

Math Bowl Team

By the way both competitions do not allow calculators. Here is a question from the PROBE test.  A cube is inscribed inside a sphere of radius R.  a smaller sphere with radius r is inscribed in the cube.  Then the ratio of R/r is:

A)  5√3    B)  √3    C) 2√3    D) 3√3   E) 4√3

Here are a couple of examples of the Math Bowl questions.  These must be answered in 30 seconds or less.

What is the probability when rolling two dice that a double comes up?

Find all the solutions of  2x4 -7x2 +5 = 0
